Bach Flower Remedies & Australian Bush Flower Essences
The use of Flower Remedies is not a new phenomenon. The Australian Aboriginals have always used flowers to heal the emotions, as did the Ancient Egyptians. There has also been a very long tradition of use of Flower Essences in India, Asia and South America and they were also very popular in Europe in the Middle Ages. This healing method was rediscovered by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930’s after he tired of seeing the results of allopathic medicine where patients not only recovered from the disease but also the cure.
Who Was Dr Bach?
Dr. Bach was a renowned physician based in Harley Street who gave up his practice to devote all of his time to the search for a true method of healing. Dr. Bach believed that diseases of the body come about as a result of imbalances or negativity at the level of the soul, and by correcting the problem here would result in the body healing on all levels. The difference, he observed, between his diseased patients and healthy people was ‘vital force’ especially the lack of it in sick people. He set about trying to understand how to put life force back into those diseased people.
Like Paracelsus, he was convinced that disease of the body is due not primarily to physical causes but to disturbing moods or states of mind which interfere with the normal happiness of the person. If this is allowed to continue it leads to a disturbance of the bodily functions that result in ill health. Fundamentally, Bach maintains that it is up to the sick person to change his mind about his own illness but that healthy aesthetic vibrations can help him recover his innate desire to be well. A long bout of worry or fear can according to Bach weaken a person’s ability to resist disease through their lack of vitality – which governs a healthy immune system. “It is not the disease that needs treatment,” Bach said, “There are no diseases only sick people” His views were confirmed in recent years by medical researchers.
His quest brought him to flowers as they are the finest expression of the plant kingdoms life force. Flower essences are made from flowers that are at their peak of bloom and so they are at the pinnacle of the plant’s energetic life cycle as well as biological. For orchids the experience of being in bloom is like an orgasm that goes on non-stop for as long as two months. By capturing the vital force expressed from the flower and putting it into people he could restore their health. All he needed was the medium by which to do so.
His most famous and most popularly used remedy is the Rescue Remedy that contains five flower essences. Rock Rose for alleviating terror and panic, Impatiens to release tension, Star of Bethlehem balances traumatic grief, Clematis grounds the day dreamer and Cherry Plum antidotes impulsivity.

Choosing an Essence
You could simply read through the information on each of the individual essences and decide which ones are most appropriate. However, this can overwhelm some people and they could feel that they need them all! To drastically narrow down the number of essences that you are considering ask yourself the following questions – what do I most want in my life? or what is the major issue that I am working through at the moment? Then simply choose the appropriate Bush Essences. Alternatively you could look through the Flower Insight Cards and choose those which most appeal to you (limiting them to no more than 3) and also include any card that you have an aversion to. Invariably you will choose Essences that will address your most pertinent issues. These Essences can then be mixed together in a dosage bottle.
Bach compared his remedies to that of beautiful music or arrangements of colour, or any glorious uplifting medium that gives inspiration. His cure was not to attack the disease but to flood the body with beautiful vibrations from wild flowers and herbs in the presence of which “disease would melt away as snow in sunshine.”
