Flower Essences – a Tool of the Spirit

January 7th, 2010

Flower essences should not be confused with “essential oils” as used in aromatherapy. Essential oils are concentrated chemical constituents from herbs, collected by a distillation process. When applied to the skin or inhaled, it has a powerful, but mostly chemical, effect on the body and mind. An essence, on the other hand, is the concentrated energy of the plant; its effects are primarily energetic or “auric”, not physical.

Although knowledge of the healing powers of flowers and herbs goes back many centuries, the modern story of flower essences starts at around 1928. That was when Dr. Edward Bach, a homeopathic doctor, retired from his London practice to the countryside to research a new kind of medicine. Until his death in 1936, he sought out the 38 remedies that now bear his name. In the last 20 years, much research has been done to discover additional remedies around the world.

To make Easter Lily, follow the sun infusion method developed by Dr. Bach. Place a clear, glass pan on the grass in your yard, pour spring water into it (just enough to cover the bottom), and placed 3 easter lily flowers in the pan. This needs to soak up the heating rays of the sun for 4 or 5 hours, from early morning until around noon. What happens when you do this strange operation is truly an alchemical miracle.

When the bottled essence is taken into the human body, the energy is released into your own energy field (the aura) and causes it to change. Something new is added to your aura; old patterns in the aura are rearranged and released. Each essence is experienced, in human terms, as a psychological or emotional force, a new psychic “theme” to integrate. For instance, Easter Lily essence deals with resolving the tension between sexuality and spirituality, purifying the body and its drives. Another flower, Mariposa Lily, deals with the experience of warm maternal love and support, etc. If you have a lack or imbalance in the theme represented by some essence, it will help you reorder your experience into a new balance. In this way, the flowers help us heal old emotional wounds and uncover our true selves. Each flower has its own lesson to teach our souls. Flowers are astounding alchemists.

Natural Remedies for Panic Attacks

January 5th, 2010

Having a panic attack is one of the most uncomfortable feelings imaginable. You’ll be glad to know that there are many natural ways to tread anxiety disorders without prescription drugs.

Breath Techniques — The breath has long been used as a means to center the mind and calm the body. Just think of meditation and Yoga. By controlling your breath, you can begin to keep your body from tensing up and your mind from spiraling out of control. The root physical symptom of a panic attack can be found in the breath. Fast and shallow breathing can escalate to a full-blown panic attack. Learning to take deep, slow breaths will help to derail the train of events that has the potential to lead to a panic attack.

Herbs and Herbal Teas — It is not uncommon for prescription drugs to come with unwelcome side effects. To avoid these side effects, you may consider herbal remedies. These can consist of valerian, passion flower, chamomile, California poppy, kava kava, or lemon balm. I can be challenging to estimate the right dose. People are very different and while one person may need a small dose, another may require a larger one.

Homeopathy — These are various herbs that have been mixed together to treat panic and anxiety disorders. Bach Flower Remedies are created from a mix of flowers. Their Rescue Remedy has helped many find relief from anxiety problems. Also be on the lookout for “Kali Phos 6x” which is designed to treat the nervous system. Specifically when it is stressed to to worry or panic.

Alternative Therapies — Ever thought about acupuncture? It is an ancient art that aligns the body’s chi, or energy. Or if you can’t stand the thought of being stuck full of pins, try the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). You’ll get the benefits without the risk of becoming a human pin cushion. You can do it at home in just a few minute.

Because each of us is different some of the above listed remedies for panic attacks might be quicker for you.  Take your time and find the combination that works best for you.

Toothache Home Tips and Remedies

January 4th, 2010

A toothache, also known as odontalgia or, less frequently, as odontalgy, is an aching pain in or around a tooth. In most cases toothaches are caused by problems in the tooth or jaw, such as cavities, gum disease, the emergence of wisdom teeth, a cracked tooth, jaw disease, or exposed tooth root.

Toothache and jaw pain are common complaints. There may be severe pain to pressure, or to hot or cold stimuli. The pain may persist for longer than 15 seconds after the stimulus is removed. As the area of inflammation increases, the pain becomes more severe. It may radiate to the cheek, the ear, or the jaw. Other signs and symptoms that may lead you to seek care include the following:

* Pain with chewing

* Hot or cold sensitivity

* Bleeding or discharge from around a tooth or gums

* Swelling around a tooth or swelling of your jaw

* Injury or trauma to the area

Toothaches are painful but can be prevented by take suitable precautions. Avoid eating food which will result in the formation of acid in the mouth, brush teeth regularly with a fluoride toothpaste.

After every meal, chew a little salt and gargle with water. Soft brush can be used to clean the particles caught between the teeth and the gums. Make it habit to clean the teeth every morning and before retiring to bed. In India, people use thin twig of a Babul, Banyan or a Neem tree (known as Datoon) as a brush. First it is to be crushed to make it soft and then use it like a brush. It is advisable to us a Datoon of Babul, Banyan or Neem tree at least once a day.

Try putting whisky on some cotton wool and placing it on the tooth. Try Rescue Remedy for help. It is a combination of Bach Flower Essences and is available at almost all healthfood stores. Oil of cloves would really help a lot ,you put it on a small ball of cotton wool and place it on the tooth.

The bubble is an abcess or infection bubble filled with pus and blood. Get back to the dentist right away. The longer you wait the more damage to your mouth and he may have to go deeper into the bone. If an infection is present the novacaine will not take hold because it can’t get through the infection.

Exercises for teeth : Keep the lips closed. Pound the upper teeth on lower teeth for 30 to 40 times twice a day. Then massage the saliva on gums with the tongue. That will ensure proper blood circulation in teeth and increase the life of healthy teeth and gums.

Tea Tree Oil on the boil will relieve the pain and draw it out faster. If you don’t have any on hand, use Vicks Vapor Rub. Any time you break out fairly frequently with boils, especially under your arms, inner thighs and or under your breast, you should see a dermatologist about hidradenitis supportiva.

Overcoming Anxiety – Tired of Being Told To Breath? 5 Natural Remedies to Cure Panic Attacks

January 3rd, 2010

There are so many methods for overcoming anxiety and several wonderful natural panic attack treatments. Certainly there is no reason for giving into the conventional treatment for panic attack symptoms, which almost always translates to subjecting yourself to questionable medications.

After all, those prescription pills aren’t actually an option for anxiety cures or to cure panic attacks anyway. At best they simply mask the symptoms without ever enacting a factual cure. Genuine cures can be found in the realm of alternative medicine that are not only safe, but also reliable, effective, and inexpensive.

Some focus on diet and exercise, others by mental manipulation even through hypnosis, but the best ones in my opinion would be those that eliminate symptoms by healing physical deficiencies. If those types work, then obviously any other natural solution is not essentially required. Therefore the present article is focused primarily on nutritional solutions to overcoming anxiety disorders and panic attacks.

Apple Cider Vinegar – is a wonderful natural panic disorder treatment. Use preferably organic ACV but it should at least be unprocessed or as they say, “With the mother in it.” 1 tsp. 3 times a day in a glass of water has been reported to work wonders, or as much as a tbsp. or two especially in emergencies, has also been documented to be extremely helpful.

Vitamin B-12 & Folic Acid – is another standby in the realm of naturally overcoming anxiety. Any good Vitamin-B supplement should contain both and it is best taken in conjunction with 5-HTP. Of course there is no good reason not to take all of these remedies simultaneously, as apposed to relying on just one. Not necessarily at the same time, but throughout your day, as there is no conflict between them when taken in the recommended dosage.

5-HTP is an excellent option for a natural panic attack treatment. 5-HTP, short for 5-hydroxytryptophan is an intermediate metabolite which is situated between the amino acid tryptophan and the neurotransmitter serotonin. As we all know serotonin is esential for feelings of wellness, and for dealing with stress and anxiety. 5-HTP usually comes in 100 mg capsules. The recommended dosage is once to twice daily. It is suggested that you initially start with only one capsule a day, then gradually increase the dosage to two. However, do not exceed the recommended dose.

St. Johns Wort – Winter Cherry – Siberian Ginseng – are all superb herbs to take for anxiety disorders. Winter cherry and Siberian ginseng both support adrenal gland functions. Malfunctioning adrenal glands are often at the root of physical causes for anxiety disorders. Winter cherry has been shown to have a sedating effect on the body and helps to rebuild the digestive and nervous system. It is also excellent to take at night for a more restful sleep. Siberian ginseng has been used traditionally to stimulate and nourish the adrenal glands and for increasing mental alertness. St John’s Wort has been shown to be very successful in increasing a sense of well-being and reducing or even eliminating the occurrence and symptoms of panic attacks.

Flower Essences & Homeopathic Remedies – in particular Bach’s Rescue Remedy is a favorite for panic attacks. As far as homeopathic remedies are concerned Gelsemium reigns supreme. There are so many other flower essences and homeopathic remedies for anxiety disorders and panic attacks, but any good health food store will carry them, and of course they’re available on line.

Well that’s at least a healthy start on the road to living your life free from anxiety disorder symptoms. If you get these items in your home and set yourself up on a program to take them, and stay with it, you will get relief. As far as a 100% complete cure that all depends on the severity of your disorder and what’s causing it in the first place.

I hope the title of this article didn’t lead you to believe that deep breathing is ineffective towards dealing with panic disorders, or that I was making fun of it. On the contrary, it most certainly is. My position is, why should you have to? The same with regular exercise. Of course both are great if not essential for everyone, but if you can get to the root of the problem, that would be best.

No matter your situation, I do sympathize as no one can truly imagine the torment caused by this disorder, until they’ve personally experienced it. Don’t give up as you will achieve a total cure through holistic methods. There are so many, many, options, and as I said before, you can take advantage of them all, simultaneously.

Panic disorder is such a prevalent condition in our society, so don’t ever think your alone, and as far as a cure, your definitely on the right track. The day will come soon when you will look back at this condition and laugh. Seriously. Maybe today will be that day, so good luck and best wishes.

Bach Flower Remedies To The Rescue

January 1st, 2010

I have to thank my son’s bump on the head for some of my
conviction about the benefit of Bach flower remedies. Jon was
about a year old and had hit his head quite badly. The bump was
swelling before my eyes, and I decided to try out the Bach
rescue cream that I’d recently purchased. The bump was partly in
his hair and partly on his forehead. I carefully put the cream
on – it was difficult to get the cream close to the skin where
his hair was. The next day the bruise on his forehead had gone
completely, but the bruise in his hair was still there, although
it was not as bad as I had expected it to be. This amazed me and
made me determined to learn about these amazing remedies.

I bought and studied the little booklet that explained all about
them – as a very busy mum I was happy to have something that
wasn’t too big to read! I was also happy that the remedies
weren’t drugs and could be used safely with even tiny babies.
There are 38 different flower remedies for various psychological
states, and I instantly could see how I could use them for
myself, my family and my friends: larch is for someone who lacks
self confidence, aspen is for generalised fears, impatiens for
impatience, heather for those who want to be the centre of
attention all the time, and scleranthus for the undecided.

The remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach -pronounced
‘Batch’ – who lived in England from 1886-1936. He was trained as
a doctor and worked as a pathologist and bacteriologist, but he
felt that medicine was not getting to the root of the problem.
He learnt about homeopathy, and developed various important
homeopathic remedies, but he was still not satisfied, and this
led him to develop the Bach flower remedies.

The remedies are based on flowering plants and trees, and are
designed to correct inappropriate psychological states. This
doesn’t mean that they’re not suitable for physical problems,
because Bach believed that there was “a factor above the
physical plane which in the ordinary course of life protects or
renders susceptible any particular individual with regard to
disease, of whatever nature it may be.” (From ‘Heal Thyself’ by
Edward Bach). In other words, if you are dissatisfied or
distressed, you are more likely to catch a cold or become
chronically ill.

Bach found the remedies through intuition: sometimes he would
hold a flower in his hand and experience in his body and mind
what the remedy was capable of, and sometimes he experienced
deep negative emotions and would go out into the countryside
searching until he found the flower that would turn off these
feelings. Bach also found that if he floated the flowers in a
glass bowl containing spring water in the sunshine, this healing
property of the flower passed into the water. For some plants
that flowered early in the year, such as holly, Bach boiled the
flowers and stems to overcome the problem of the lack of
sunshine.

The remedies are normally taken in one of two ways:

Putting two drops of the chosen remedy in a glass of water and
sipping it frequently Putting two drops of several remedies in a
bottle with water and/or brandy and taking 4 drops 4 times a day

There is one combination that Dr Bach found he used a lot, and
he called this ‘rescue remedy’. This is a mixture of 5 of the 38
flower remedies (cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose and
star of Bethlehem). It can be used for any emergency or
stressful event. This is really helpful after a fall, or an
argument, before visiting the dentist or taking an examination.
The normal way of taking it is to put 4 drops in a glass of
water and then to take small, frequent sips. You can also take
it straight from the bottle in a real emergency. Many nurses I
meet swear by it, and secretly and unofficially recommend it to
their patients.

Rescue cream contains the same 5 remedies as the rescue remedy
drops, but with the addition of crab apple and is useful for
cuts and bruises, and for babies who fall and bang their heads!

The remedies are made using brandy, and this may be a problem
for some people. An alternative way to take them is by dabbing
them on the wrist, behind the ears and at the temples – this way
the benefit of the remedies may be felt without imbibing alcohol.

The remedies do not interfere with any drugs, and can be taken
with good effect by the terminally ill. Babies and pets seem to
benefit often apparently instantly and miraculously, and many
adults can tell you of amazing results for themselves and their
children

Trials With Bach Flower Remedies

December 30th, 2009

Bach flower remedies were created by Dr. Edward Bach. He thought that negative emotions were the cause of illness. He devised 38 negative feelings that people have. Dr. Bach matched a flower remedy to each of emotions. The Bach Flower remedies are each used for a different type of emotional state.

Contrary to popular belief, Bach flower remedies are not homeopathic. It is true that both forms of medicines are diluted and create no side effects. Homeopathy and Bach Flower essences are both diluted but in a totally different manner. Flower remedies are diluted via the sun method for some essences. For plants that bloom when there is limited sunlight, these remedies are diluted by boiling method. Bach remedies do not follow the homeopathy laws of similars or successive dilutions. Bach flowers try to create a positive energy to negate a negative energy.

In the sun method, the flowers are placed in a container with fresh water. The container is left in the sun for several hours. Bach believes the sun rays would transfer energy to the medicine. After the flowers are taken out of the water, they are put into a container. Alcohol is added to preserve the flower. An equal amount of water is also added to dilute the remedy. The final product is a liquid based flower essence. The dilutions can also be made into a cream or spray.

In the boiling method, flower essences are put into a pot of water. They are boiled in water. The remedies are boiled several times with the water being replenished after each boiling interval. After several boiling intervals, the remedy is mixed with an equal amount of alcohol and water. The boiling method is necessary due to the fact that many flowers bloom when the sun is not shining. This is really the only way to create the essence without the sun.

The most popular flower remedy is called rescue remedy. Rescue remedy is a combination of 5 flower essences which are Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem and Cherry Plum. There is also a rescue remedy cream that contains these 5 flowers plus Crab Apple. Rescue remedy is suppose to be used during anxiety and panic attacks.

Research on the Bach flower remedies is limited. These flower remedies were tested in a few double blind placebo trials. The results of these studies are given below.

In one trial, 100 university students in England were recruited. The trial examined whether rescue remedy could help relieve stress and anxiety as compared to a placebo. The students were given questionnaires to fill out so researchers knew of their mental state. After 8 days, the students were reevaluated. The Bach remedies show no better effect than a placebo.[1]

In a second trial, children with ADHD were given Bach rescue remedy. In the three month study, Bach flower remedies showed no better effect than a placebo. Although, both the placebo and the flower remedies reduced the symptoms with ADHD.[2]

The final trial is the most recent trial with Bach Rescue Remedy. This trial observed 111 people between ages 18-49 in a double blind clinical trial. The standard mean to evaluate anxiety was used before and after administering the rescue remedy and the placebo. The study suggest that rescue remedy may be able to reduce high level of situational anxiety as compared to the placebo.[3]

Bach flowers have not been research extensively. Some studies suggest the remedies are no better than a placebo. Other study suggest that these remedies may help in stressful situations. More research using well conducted placebo based trials needs to be done to give a definite conclusion on how effective these remedies can be.

Bach Flower Remedies & Australian Bush Flower Essences

December 30th, 2009

The use of Flower Remedies is not a new phenomenon. The Australian Aboriginals have always used flowers to heal the emotions, as did the Ancient Egyptians. There has also been a very long tradition of use of Flower Essences in India, Asia and South America and they were also very popular in Europe in the Middle Ages. This healing method was rediscovered by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930’s after he tired of seeing the results of allopathic medicine where patients not only recovered from the disease but also the cure.

Who Was Dr Bach?

Dr. Bach was a renowned physician based in Harley Street who gave up his practice to devote all of his time to the search for a true method of healing. Dr. Bach believed that diseases of the body come about as a result of imbalances or negativity at the level of the soul, and by correcting the problem here would result in the body healing on all levels. The difference, he observed, between his diseased patients and healthy people was ‘vital force’ especially the lack of it in sick people. He set about trying to understand how to put life force back into those diseased people.

Like Paracelsus, he was convinced that disease of the body is due not primarily to physical causes but to disturbing moods or states of mind which interfere with the normal happiness of the person. If this is allowed to continue it leads to a disturbance of the bodily functions that result in ill health. Fundamentally, Bach maintains that it is up to the sick person to change his mind about his own illness but that healthy aesthetic vibrations can help him recover his innate desire to be well. A long bout of worry or fear can according to Bach weaken a person’s ability to resist disease through their lack of vitality – which governs a healthy immune system. “It is not the disease that needs treatment,” Bach said, “There are no diseases only sick people” His views were confirmed in recent years by medical researchers.

His quest brought him to flowers as they are the finest expression of the plant kingdoms life force. Flower essences are made from flowers that are at their peak of bloom and so they are at the pinnacle of the plant’s energetic life cycle as well as biological. For orchids the experience of being in bloom is like an orgasm that goes on non-stop for as long as two months. By capturing the vital force expressed from the flower and putting it into people he could restore their health. All he needed was the medium by which to do so.

His most famous and most popularly used remedy is the Rescue Remedy that contains five flower essences. Rock Rose for alleviating terror and panic, Impatiens to release tension, Star of Bethlehem balances traumatic grief, Clematis grounds the day dreamer and Cherry Plum antidotes impulsivity.

Australian Bush Flower Essences

Australian Bush Flower Essences started within a natural health clinic and became the choice of health practitioners worldwide because of their diverse range and efficacious results within a clinical environment. There are a number of unique points associated with these essences, firstly, Australia being the first continent has some of the oldest species in the world and has the highest number of flowering species – a wonderfully rich biodiversity in natural healing qualities. Secondly, Australian Bush Flower Essences address many contemporary health issues such as communication, learning difficulties, spirituality, radiation, electromagnetic radiation, space clearing and sexuality not addressed elsewhere. The Bush Essences have a reputation world wide for being incredibly quick acting and having a profound healing effect. Australian Bush Flower Essences were the first to introduce combination essences, creams and mists with product names that clearly identify the health issue.. Bush Flower Essences are one of the highest retail growth categories in natural health retailing today.

Choosing an Essence

You could simply read through the information on each of the individual essences and decide which ones are most appropriate. However, this can overwhelm some people and they could feel that they need them all! To drastically narrow down the number of essences that you are considering ask yourself the following questions – what do I most want in my life? or what is the major issue that I am working through at the moment? Then simply choose the appropriate Bush Essences. Alternatively you could look through the Flower Insight Cards and choose those which most appeal to you (limiting them to no more than 3) and also include any card that you have an aversion to. Invariably you will choose Essences that will address your most pertinent issues. These Essences can then be mixed together in a dosage bottle.

Bach compared his remedies to that of beautiful music or arrangements of colour, or any glorious uplifting medium that gives inspiration. His cure was not to attack the disease but to flood the body with beautiful vibrations from wild flowers and herbs in the presence of which “disease would melt away as snow in sunshine.”
