Among other things, my dog Moxie has taken to smoking Virginia Slims. As you might imagine, this has caused some problems in my household. I suspect the origin of this odd new behavior is based on Moxie wanting to preserve herself as the sole dog of the household. Here’s how it went down. I was considering getting a new dog and talking it over in my kitchen with a friend. Moxie was on her extra-large pillow-bed in the corner pretending to look at squirrels through the glass slider. I should have known better. Anyways, I initiate process of seeking out another border collie from a rescue group. If you’re not aware, the vetting process to adopt a rescue dog, it is quite strict. It involves an application in which they ask you about your house, yard, your children, your eating habits, the color of your bathroom tile, whether you use winter-weight oil, whether you have a rose garden, how many cell phones you own, if you’ve ever traveled to Lesotho, and a whole bunch of other dog-centered questions. I passed this stage of the vetting process successfully and so the next step was the “home visit.” As I see it, the home visit is where some stranger comes into your house, looks around for about 10 minutes, asks a few questions, and then “decides” based on their judgment if you are responsible enough to care for a dog that was abandoned. So, this woman named Debbie calls me and says she’s going to come by our house, look around and let us know if we are allowed to adopt a dog from her. Debbie stops by and makes a comment about my stairs, “Oooh, carpeted stairs, that’s a good thing.” I’m mid-response when Moxie saunters into the living room with a Virginia Slim dangling out of the corner of her mouth. Little wisps of smoke spiral circularly upward mimicking the spiraling disbelief that fills my head. Moxie inhales deeply, then out of the corner of her black mouth, she exhales loudly. She walks over to Debbie and with a quick head-flick, shakes an ash off on Debbie’s boot. I’m thinking “oh sh_t, this isn’t good–this is NOT good.” I was about to say something but just then, Debbie bends down, pats Moxie on the head and then removes the cigarette from Moxie’s mouth. She twists the cigarette in her fingers in order to read the label. “Virginia Slims,” she says, “these are full of tar and additives.” “Do you feed Moxie a raw food diet?” “Yes,” I answer, “green tripe and chicken necks, mostly.” Debbie then says, “you know, you really should consider looking into `Ecstasy Herbal cigarettes Original flavor,’ they are much much healthier for a developing border collie.” “I’ll look into it,” I mumble and out of the corner of my eye I can see Moxie try to contain a mischievous smile. About two days later I order a carton of Ecstasy Herbal cigarettes Original Flavor. I even tried one myself. Moxie couldn’t be more thrilled and she smokes about a half-a-pack a day. They are as natural as green tripe and chicken necks and she much prefers them to Virginia Slims. Needless to say, Debbie never got back to me about another dog.

These are nice every now and then if you feel like having a smoke and you’re trying to cut back, but don’t expect a great taste. I was a cigar smoker for a while and I used these as a replacement. They smell kind of rancid and they’re pricy. Just quit the old fashioned way and go cold turkey. That’s the best way to go in my opinion.

I’ve smoked these before along with Newports. I prefer these even though they are on the pricey side. It’s got the same smell of any other cigarette despite there being no tobacco in these. The taste/flavoring is all right. Nothing to write home about but it doesn’t quite leave the after-taste of a regular cigar or cigarette. Whether you are quitting, switching things up, or whatever you’re personally choosing, this is a good brand to consider.
