Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem, and include panic disorders, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anxiety disorders develop due to an interplay between enviromnental and genetic factors. Cognitive behavior therapy is useful for this disorder, as well as prescription anxiolytic drugs.

However, many patients prefer a natural approach or dislike the side effects of prescription drugs, and there are many non-prescription supplements available to help anxiety. Before starting natural supplements for an anxiety problem, be sure to mention your concerns and get a general checkup from your doctor. Symptoms resembling anxiety and anxiety attacks can be caused by physical diseases such as hormone imbalance, hyperthyroidism or cardiac arrhythmias.

However, if you are sure your problem is an anxiety disorder, the following supplements may be of help, and often have fewer side effects than commercial pharmaceutical products.

Chamomile tea is one of the best-known natural remedies for anxiety. Its affects the digestive tract and the nervous system, thus it is helpful for people who suffer from gastro-intestinal symptoms such as cramps along with mental anxiety. It is recommended that patients drink fresh tea made with chamomile leaves, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per cup of water, several times a day. It is also available in tinctures which can be added to water. Chamomile capsules are convenient to take along to work, and don’t take as long to brew as the tea. The usual dose is 250 to 500 mg 3 to 4 times daily.

Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a nerve tonic which also has a restorative (adaptogenic) property. It has a calming effect in cases of mild depression and anxiety, and is also reputed to be an aphrodisiac. Damiana contains flavonoids that act on benzodiazepine and GABA receptors. It exhibits anxiolytic activity, muscle relaxation and sedation. Use 2-4 g of dried leaves infused in a cup of boiling water; 2-3 cups are taken daily. Alternatively, 2-4 ml of a liquid extract or 3-4 grams of powdered leaf in tablets or capsules taken twice daily can be substituted if desired.

Damiana has demonstrated mild hypoglycemic effects in animal studies. Patients with diabetes and hypoglycemia should use this plant with caution, and monitor blood sugar levels closely. Damiana has a traditional use as an abortive and is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) has a very quick calming effect on the nervous system and causes an uplifting, euphoric feeling. It is also a muscle relaxant and mild sedative. It is helps anxiety, tension, stress, irritability and insomnia. Kava stops the mind from racing, often a symptom of generalized anxiety disorder.

The usual dose is 750 mg twice daily. Do not exceed 4 capsules per day.

Kava Kava is a traditional Polynesian remedy, and while it has been used safely by Polynesians for centuries, now that it has become popular worldwide it has been linked to some cases of liver failure in people of other ethnic groups who have difficulty metabolizing it. Ask a health care professional before use if you have a history of liver problems, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are taking any medication. Stop and see a doctor if you develop symptoms that may signal liver problems (e.g., unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin).

Do not use kava kava if less than 18 years of age, or if pregnant/breastfeeding. Do not combine with alcoholic beverages, or prescription anxiolytics or antidepressants . Excessive use, or use with products that cause drowsiness, may impair your ability to operate a vehicle or heavy equipment. Do not take Kava Kava on a daily basis for more than four weeks without consulting a health care provider. Take frequent breaks from use.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is most often used for insomnia, but it can also be taken in the daytime to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. This herb is often included in European formulas for heart palpitations, which often have anxiety as a component. It is taken in capsule form, 500 mg daily, or 20-30 drops of tincture, or as a fresh tea. Passionflower, though it helps bring on natural sleep, does not have the sedative effects of many prescription sleeping pills.

Pulsatilla is a homeopathic remedy said to be most suitable for shy, hypersensitive people who tend to feel warm rather than cold. Homeopathic practitioners recommend a 30C potency 2-4 times daily for relief of acute symptoms, and 30C or 6C 1-2 times daily for chronic use. Homeopathic remedies use miniscule concentrations of compounds to “nudge” the body into healing itself. They either help or they do not; there are no toxic side effects.

Scullcup (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a relaxing and gentle sedative for the central nervous system. It is very good for nervous tension and for nervous exhaustion plus neurological and neuromotor problems. The dose is 10-20 drops of fresh plant tincture or 1-2 dropperfuls of dried plant tincture. Skullcap can also be sleep inducing, but it is rarely habituating.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is commonly used for depression, but helps anxiety as well. Use a 300 mg extract 3 times daily. Quality varies widely between brands; it is best to buy a product standardized to contain 3-5% hyperforin and 0.3% hypericin. It works by increasing the level of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system such as serotonin and dopamine. Do not use this product if also taking prescription antidepressants.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been used since Greek and Roman times to promote sleep and relaxation. It can treat insomnia, anxiety, and stress related gastrointestinal upset. According to one theory, valerian affects the brain in a way similar to valium; while another theory holds that valerian contains GABA, a neurotransmitter which has a calming affect on the brain, or else influences the brain’s natural production of GABA. Also, some reasearchers believe that valerian affects serotonin levels in a manner similar to anitdepressant drugs such as Prozac.

If using valerian to treat insomnia, take the herb 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed. It can be taken 2-4 times daily to help stress and anxiety. The recommended dose of tincture is 30-60 drops, or a capsule or tablet of 300-500 mg.

Some people feel groggy after taking valerian; if this occurs, lower the dose. Avoid hazardous activities while using valerian, and do not combine it with other sedatives, antidepressants or alcohol. Do not take valerian for more than 3 weeks, as it can be habituating.

Verbena (Verbena officinalis) is a relaxing nervous system tonic indicated for a wide range of nervous disorders including nervous exhaustion and stress. As a tincture, use 2-4 mls up to 4 times daily. Avoid use during pregnancy as this herb is a uterine stimulant.

Withania (Withania somnifera) is an ayurvedic herb sold under the name Ashwaghanda. It is a very good tonic herb that is especially helpful for debility and nervous exhaustion due to stress. It has steriodal, adaptogenic, sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also useful for panic attacks and phobic disorders such as agoraphobia. Use 1 tsp powder 3 times daily.

Magnesium Supplements and the Benefits of Magnesium

As the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, magnesium is essential to your good health. Approximately half of your total body magnesium is found in your bones and the other half is distributed throughout cells of your body tissues and organs. This critical mineral is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in your body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps your heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps your bones strong.

Surprisingly we are all Magnesium Deficient

The 1999-2000 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggest that substantial numbers of adults in the United States fail to consume recommended amounts of magnesium.

Research done throughout the world shows that the United States RDA for Magnesium is not sufficient to make up for the amount lost in bowel movements and sweat. Aggravating matters more, sports, physical work, mental exertion, competition or other stresses, all increase your magnesium requirements.

The shocking part is amounts actually consumed in American diets is even less than the RDA! The amounts consumed are generally far less than enough to maintain equilibrium in metabolic balance studies. For many people, dietary intake may not be high enough to promote an optimal magnesium status, which may be protective against disorders such as cardiovascular disease and immune dysfunction.

Magnesium and Osteoporosis

Magnesium deficiency may be a risk factor for osteoporosis4 because magnesium deficiency alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that regulate calcium. Several human studies have suggested that supplementing with magnesium can improve your bone mineral density. In a study of older adults, a greater magnesium intake maintained bone mineral density to a greater degree than a lower magnesium intake. Diets with recommended levels of magnesium are beneficial for bone health, but further investigation on the exact role of magnesium in bone metabolism and osteoporosis is needed.

Magnesium and High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Magnesium may play an important role in regulating your blood pressure naturally. Diets including plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are good sources of potassium and magnesium, are consistently associated with lower blood pressure. The DASH study suggested that high blood pressure could be significantly lowered by a diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy foods. This kind of diet is high in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, and low in sodium and bad fats.

A Harvard study examined the effect of various nutritional factors on incidence of high blood pressure in over 30,000 US male health professionals in 1992. This four year study found that a lower risk of hypertension was associated with dietary patterns that provided more magnesium, potassium, and dietary fiber.

Foods high in magnesium are usually high in potassium and dietary fiber too. This makes it difficult to evaluate the independent effect of magnesium on blood pressure. However, newer scientific evidence from DASH clinical trials is strong enough that the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure states that “diets with high magnesium are positive lifestyle modifications for individuals with hypertension.” This group recommends the DASH diet as a beneficial eating plan for people with hypertension and for those with “pre-hypertension” who desire to prevent high blood pressure.

You May Need Magnesium Supplements

Considering magnesium plays a role in the prevention of so many diseases and the fact that there is a good chance you are magnesium deficient, you may need magnesium supplements. Your doctor can test your magnesium status when above-mentioned medical problems occur, and determine if you need a magnesium supplement.

The “Awesome Foursome,” which includes Coenzyme Q10, L-Carnitine, D-Ribose, and Magnesium, assists our hearts to better metabolize energy and protects them from the stress of cardiovascular disease. This combination goes straight to the basic biochemistry of cellular energy metabolism. In order to see how Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, D-Ribose, and magnesium work together to promote cardiovascular health, we must first the affects of each one in particular.

Coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the mitochondrial membrane, mitochondrial membrane, mitochondrial DNA, and cell walls from free-radical attack, is most important in the body for its central role in energy metabolism. About ninety percent of the ATP is used by the cells for food and oxidized in the mitochondria. Fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins enter the Krebs’ cycle and move from step to step spinning off electrons after being carried across the mitochondrial membrane. These electrons are sent to the electron transport chain where the energy is captured as a phosphate group is added to ADP, forming ATP. By recycling ATP, CO2 and water are produced in the process called oxidative phosphorylation. Through this, Coenzyme Q10 makes sure that the electrons are carried to just the right place to pass on their energy. Without Coenzyme Q10, the electron transport chain would completely break down. Because the electron transport chain is the largest contributor to cellular energy turnover, losing it would be catastrophic to the body. It is necessary for there to be an excess of Coenzyme Q10 in the mitochondria to be maximally effective. Only having enough is not sufficient in order for the job to be done properly, while a deficiency greatly affects the mitochondria’s ability to supply the cell with energy. Coenzyme Q10 deficiency can be caused by cellular stress, as it places a great deal of strain on Coenzyme Q10 availability. Those with heart disease, hypertension, gingival disease, and Parkinson’s disease are known to be deficient in Coenzyme Q10. Although it is not determined whether the deficiencies are the cause or the effect of these medical problems, the result is that they sap the life out of the mitochondria and reduce energy supplies. Coenzyme Q10 cannot function properly if there are no electrons coming out of the Krebs’ cycle and the Krebs’ cycle does not work without the fuel transported into the mitochondria by L-carnitine.

Because fatty acids are the preferred energy fuel for hearts and most other cells in the body, L-carnitine is necessary for its ability to facilitate beta oxidation of fatty acids as energy fuel. This action is critical to cell and tissue function because fatty acids are the preferred fuel for energy recycling in cells. L-carnitine is deficient in people with heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, lipid metabolic disorders, mitochondrial disorders, which disrupts the normal metabolism of fatty acids and reduces available energy supplies and leads to the accumulation of toxic by-products from fatty acid metabolism. Through L-carnitine supplementation, fatty acid metabolism can be revived and normal mitochondrial function can be restored. However, this improvement in cellular energy metabolism can’t make up for the energy drain that comes from the loss of energy that is caused by low oxygen delivery to the tissue. But, D-Ribose can make up for the energy drain.

As long as there is enough L-carnitine and Coenzyme Q10 in the body, the process of energy utilization and supply can proceed, allowing cells and tissues to have plenty of oxygen and leaving the pool of energy substrates in the cell high. The cellular supply of oxygen can be restricted by acute or chronic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, many skeletal or neuromuscular diseases and even high-intensity exercise. Cells that are deprived of oxygen cause the mitochondrial energy turnover to become inefficient. Because oxygen is required to let the oxidative pathway of energy recycling to work properly, the cellular energy supply cannot keep up with the demand if the mitochondria can not recycle energy efficiently. However, the cell has a constant need for energy, causing it to use all its ATP stores and then continue to break down the by-product ADP, leaving AMP which is quickly broken apart by the by-products and washed out of the cell. This results in depletion in the cellular pool of energy substrates. Ribose is the only compound that is used by the body to refill the energy pool. It is made naturally in the cells from glucose. Although every cell in the body has the capacity to make ribose, the heart, muscles, and most other tissues lack the metabolic machinery to make ribose rapidly when the cells are stressed from oxygen depletion. When oxygen deprivation is chronic or when energy metabolism is disrupted by disease, there may be so much strain on the energy supply pool that the pool cannot refill without the assistance of supplemental ribose. With supplemental ribose, the cell is able to keep up with the energy drain.

Magnesium, an essential mineral that is critical for energy requiring processes, protein synthesis, membrane integrity, nervous tissue conduction, neuromuscular excitation, muscle contraction, hormone secretion, maintenance of vascular tone, and intermediary metabolism, can lead to changes in neuromuscular, cardiovascular, immune, and hormonal function; impaired energy metabolism, and reduced capacity for physical work when there is a deficiency. A deficiency of magnesium may reduce the activity of important enzymes that are used in energy metabolism. Without adequate levels of magnesium in our cells, the cellular processes of energy metabolism can not function. Even the slightest changes in magnesium levels can have a great effect on heart and blood vessel function. Although magnesium is found in most food, deficiencies are increasing due to softened water and a trend in lower vegetable consumption.

Each member of the “Awesome Foursome” is fundamental to energy metabolism on its own, playing a vital role in supplying the heart with the energy needed to preserve its contractile force. Each is effective independently in helping hearts work through the stress of disease, but together they are unbeatable. In order to fuel all its metabolic functions, the cell needs a large, healthy pool of energy. To keep the pool vibrant and healthy, the cell needs ribose. Even with supplemental ribose, the cell needs the efficient turnover of its energy stores to balance ongoing energy utilization and supply, which is where Coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine come in. These two nutrients keep mitochondrial operations running at peak efficiency. Magnesium acts as the glue, holding energy metabolism together by turning on the enzymes that drive metabolic reactions. Together, these four nutrients reduce suffering and improve the quality of life for thousands of people. Coenzyme Q10, L-Carnitine, D-Ribose, and Magnesium can be found at your local or internet health food store.
